Falcon Dam - great for desert species such as Roadrunner and Black-throated Sparrow
Salineno and Chapeno - for specialities by the river and the best winter feeding stations in the Valley
Javelina Ranch (Martin’s Refuge) - great for photographers
Sites around McAllen - including Quinta Mazatlan, Anzalduas, Old Hidalgo Pumphouse, Allen Williams’ Yard and Jane’s Ponds
Bentsen State Park - great for raptors especially Hook-billed Kite
Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge - also great for raptors but with superb wetlands and forests too
Brushline Road and the Sal del Rey tract - for wintering geese, cranes and raptors
Edinburg Scenic Wetlands - for close views of waterbirds and hummingbirds
Valley Nature Center, Weslaco - an urban oasis with feeding stations and roosting parrots
Frontera Audubon Thicket, Weslaco - another urban migrant trap with feeding stations and wetlands
Estero Llano Grande - terrific wetland site but also good for rarities and roosting Pauraque
Sebastian fields - exactly where to look for Mountain Plover and Sprague’s Pipit in winter
Hugh Ramsey Park - thicket and feeding stations on the edge of Harlingen
Brownsville - sites for parrots and parakeets plus the new reserve at Resaca de la Palma and the famous landfill site on the edge of town
Sabal Palm Sanctuary - a gem of a place with palm forests and resacas
Old Port Isabel Road - and other specific sites where Aplomado Falcon might be found
Laguna Atascosa - thousands of wintering waterfowl and waders and feeding stations with blinds
South Padre Island - fantastic migrant traps, close-up views of herons, waders and wildfowl and wonderful boat trips into South Bay
