‘Desal fields’ can be viewed from this track leading inland from the desalination plant

All the sites in this section are treated, in detail and with precise maps and directions, in my book ‘Finding Birds in Southern Cyprus’

If you have any information which you feel would help to update the book, please email me at dave@easybirder.co.uk and I’ll add your observations to these pages

South of Larnaca

Although birders may be attracted to the large salt lake at Larnaca, the best areas are the pools, sewage ponds, beach and fields on the coastal side of the salt lake, behind the airport. These areas are particularly good for ducks, grebes, gulls, terns and waders but rare passerines have been found too.

The view from the hide overlooking Larnaca Sewage works. The causeway between the two lagoons has previously been terrific for roosting gulls.

You can drive right up to the hide but if you walk you’ll see birds such as Spectacled Warblers in the saltmarsh by the track

Looking towards the sea from Spiro’s Pool you’ll see a number of tidal pools (Spiro’s beach) that can be good for waders
